It recently occurred to me that for the first time in my life, I live within an area of the United States that is not considered a city. I grew up on the west side of Youngstown, Ohio. City limits; city schools. I then moved to the college town of Athens, Ohio, where students and locals mixed it up on a regular basis. Then to Columbus, Ohio. Then to Cincinnati. Then to URBAN suburban Evanston, Illinois.
Moving to South Central Wilmette didn’t seem like such a big deal to me. We were just moving a few miles north. In the Chicago area, you quickly realize that people who live in the city raise their eyebrows toward people who live in suburbia, especially a “suburban city” like Evanston where people still think they live in a “real city.” Well, let me tell you that Evanston is a real city. But out here just a bit further north in Wilmette, city living is far away. For Wilmette is a village, not a city.
So through this blog I will illustrate my transition from city living to village living. Stay tuned. I encourage posts by my city dweller acquaintances and village neighbors alike as we explore this topic together. I hope to see you all one day soon parked around our cul-de-sac to join us for our neighborhood Oktoberfest, a birthday party with clowns, balloons and tent, or perhaps a keg party in my two car garage in the alley.
